"Is it ever appropriate and acceptable to say “nigger”? And must I really call you “xer”? Some reflections on language policing.”

Abstract:
Language policing raises important legal, socio-political, psychological and linguistic considerations. This talk will focus on two recent events in Canadian language policing, one, a defamation court case in which I acted as expert witness, the other, a notorious public debacle around a piece of human rights legislation confronting freedom of speech.
