The Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) is a research center in biomedicine promoted by the Bellvitge University Hospital and the Viladecans Hospital. IDIBELL research is focused on neuroscience, translational medicine and regenerative medicine. Research, innovation and society are the axes on which researchers work every day with the goal of improving the quality of life of citizens.

The Institute of Neurosciences (UBneuro) goal is understanding the nervous system as a whole to give response to society challenges. It is a frontrunner in international neuroscience research, being one of the few institutes in the world that investigates the brain at every level. This includes research groups in neurobiology, neuropharmacology, pathophysiology, neurology, psychiatry, clinical psychology, neuropsychobiology and cognitive neurosciences.

The Institute has been awarded with the María de Maeztu Excellence Unit accreditation, and gathers near to 450 researchers from the University of Barcelona, in the multicultural city of Barcelona.

Institute’s researchers are carry out their research on the identification and description of the general principles and key mechanisms that govern complex systems. This includes the study of theoretical aspects within the framework of network science and the modeling of the basic agents that make up a system and the study of emerging behaviors through their interactions. The analysis often involves processing a large amount of information, which requires the continuous development of tools in the context of so-called "Big Data".

Facilities: A cluster with several GPUs for machine learning research experiments.
