Carme Junyent, professor at the Faculty of Philology and Communication of the University of Barcelona, owner of the Creu de Sant Jordi distinction and part of our PhD program has died aged 68 from pancreatic cancer. She was author of an extensive research in the field of endangered languages, linguistic anthropology and the languages of immigration in Catalonia. The UB is already working on the tribute to the researcher, who was remembered by the rector, Joan Guàrdia, as a “tireless person, with thousands of projects on her head”, and who, moreover, became a “model of lucidity at the end”.
Her death has received extensive media attention in Catalan due to her commitment to the defense of Catalan and her strong views on language policy and other controversial topics such as the use of non-sexist language strategies that violate grammar rules.
